RICK CYGE – ACOUSTIC GUITARIST Acoustic guitarist, Rick Cyge, has been doing what he loves for 40 years – first in New England where he cut his teeth in the vibrant New England folk music scene and more recently (since 1988) in Arizona performing with his wife and partner, flutist Lynn Trombetta as the group ‘Meadowlark’. Cyge performs on acoustic steel string guitar as well as nylon string guitar and mandolin. Over the years he has blended influences as diverse as contemporary folk and pop, Celtic, Country Blues, New Age and World Music into a signature sound that is uniquely his own. Many of his own compositions are fingerstyle pieces in various open tunings. Recently, while continuing to perform as Meadowlark, Rick has returned to his ‘folk and acoustic music roots’ by performing solo – this time predominantly as an instrumentalist. He is equally at home performing to large audiences in a concert setting, where he weaves humor and stories about the music into his presentation, and small venues like clubs and coffeehouses where the intimacy of the setting...
All performances are Rick Cyge’s ‘GUITARtistry” (solo instrumental guitar) unless otherwise noted. Mouse over the listing on the monthly calendar view and click on the venue name in the pop-up box to get more details. See you...
I’ve been teaching acoustic fingerstyle guitar for over 40 years! I especially enjoy helping developing guitarists find their own “voice” on the guitar and develop techniques to create their own arrangements of songs and pieces of music as solo fingerstyle guitar pieces. We will explore open tunings, especially “DADGAD”, travis picking styles, and various other tools and techniques for creating your arrangements. For me, teaching at this level is as much about mentoring my students and guiding them on their own journey of exploration and discovery and making sure they are having a good time in that process! If you’d like to study with me, you can arrange lessons either in your home (if you live in the Sedona area) or online through Skype or other video calling services by clicking here! What do Simon & Garfunkel, The Everly Brothers, Seals & Crofts, Loggins & Messina and Chad & Jeremy all have in common? There were all dynamic pairings of two musicians who, together created a signature sound that was instantly recognizable (see videos). Chris Seymour and Rick Cyge have that same kind of chemistry they create when they combine their unique individual talents that contrast and compliment one another into a single collaborative sound, Seymour & Cyge. Each of these artists brings a depth of experience and distinctive style to the mix. They released their debut CD, “Are You Happy Now?” in 2012. Rick Cyge, a seasoned performer with over 45 years on stage and a veteran of the Boston-area folk and acoustic music scene of the 1970s and 80s, performed as a solo singer/guitarist in that vibrant scene and honed his skills as not only a top-notch and well respected guitarist, performer and composer, but also became a highly sought after side man whose talents enhanced the sounds of those he accompanied both live and in the studio. After...

This is a sample of one of my favorite arrangements on the new recording. As with any Steely Dan song, “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” is a complex piece with so many layers and such intricate harmonic structure. I enjoyed the challenge of arranging it for fingerstyle guitar. I was able to combine the vocals (some, not all of the harmonies), the guitar riffs and harmonic changes onto a single fretboard with the obvious exception of the solo guitar break in the middle. I did overdub the solo. The rhythm section tracks of bass and drum kit with brushes is meant to give the basic feel of the original but with a more subtle feel to keep out of the way of the guitar.

If you’d like an mp3 of the whole track, email your email address with the phrase “Free Rikki download” in the body of the email to GUITARtistry@rickcyge.com, and I’ll send you a free mp3! I’d love your feedback on the tune!
This recording, a follow up to my debut fingestyle guitar CD, “GUITARtistry” has been over a year in the making. The process of selecting songs to include was a somewhat daunting task! So many songs, so little room on the CD!! A lot of life happened to Lynn & I during this tumultuous year that slowed and interrupted the project. As John Lennon said, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”
But I am very pleased with the final product. I have created what I feel is a fun and exciting collection of fingerstyle guitar interpretations of great songs from my favorite era, the Baby Boomer Years (mid ‘50s to mid ‘80s). The arrangements vary from solo unaccompanied guitar on pieces like David Gates’ “If” to a full string band and rhythm section of the opening track, Brian Wilson’s “California Girls”! I’ve featured songs by many of my favorite songwriters & performers: The Beach Boys, Steely Dan, Elton John, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Eagles & more. You may notice a conspicuous absence of music by certain artists, especially The Beatles. This is not by accident. I have already embarked on my next project, a fingerstyle guitar CD of some of my favorite Beatles songs.
So, I hope you’ll decide to own a copy of the new recording, “GUITARtistry 2“. If you do, may I offer a suggestion? This recording is best enjoyed sitting in a comfortable chair (no chores to attend to or company to entertain – unless they, too, want to listen) and listening with the sound turned up generously so you can experience the full spectrum of sound and all the subtle detail of the arrangements. Happy listening, and , as always, thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm!
P.S.: HINT…. GUITARtistry 2 makes wonderful stocking stuffers!
