bio

Acoustic guitarist, Rick Cyge, has been doing what he loves for 40 years – first in New England where he cut his teeth in the vibrant New England folk music scene and more recently (since 1988) in Arizona performing with his wife and partner, flutist Lynn Trombetta as the group ‘Meadowlark’. Cyge performs on acoustic steel string guitar as well as nylon string guitar and mandolin. Over the years he has blended influences as diverse as contemporary folk and pop, Celtic, Country Blues, New Age and World Music into a signature sound that is uniquely his own. Many of his own compositions are fingerstyle pieces in various open tunings.

teaching

I’ve been teaching acoustic fingerstyle guitar for over 40 years! I especially enjoy helping developing guitarists find their own “voice” on the guitar and develop techniques to create their own arrangements of songs and pieces of music as solo fingerstyle guitar pieces. We will explore open tunings, especially “DADGAD”, travis picking styles, and various other tools and techniques for creating your arrangements. For me, teaching at this level is as much about mentoring my students and guiding them on their own journey of exploration and discovery and making sure they are having a good time in that process! If you’d like to study with me, you can arrange lessons either in your home (if you live in the Sedona area) or online through Skype or other video calling services by clicking here!   Or… click on the logo -> GUITARtistry – Inspiring Guitar Lessons! duos and collaborations

In addition to performing solo as both an instrumental fingerstyle guitarist and singer/guitarist, Cyge also collaborates in several duo configurations  and ensembles offering a broad palette of styles and musical experiences. Meadowlark has been Cyge’s primary focus since teaming up with flautist Lynn Trombetta to create and perform original compositions, inspired by nature, with Celtic and world music influences. The newly formed Sedona Guitar Duo with guitarist/bassist Steve Douglas expands the music Cyge arranges for his solo GUITARtistry with the addition of Douglas’s keen ear for harmony and counterpoint.  Douglas weaves his guitar and bass work around Cyge’s strong foundation to create a more complex interpretation of the pieces. Seymour & Cyge teams Cyge with his “partner in crime”, singer/guitarist Chris Seymour to perform a nostalgic mix of songs from the Baby Boomer era on twin guitars and vocals.  In live performance, the banter between the two is reminiscent of the Smothers Brothers melding lighthearted humor into the...

Returning to New England to perform a special concert!

Rick Cyge in Concert!

Saturday, April 28th at 6pm

First Parish UU in Bridgwater, MA

This is an exciting event for me!  I am returning to New England for the first time in many years and my good friend, David Wilson is producing my concert – the first performance I’ve done in the Boston area in over 12 years!  It will also serve as a sort of reunion for all my “family of friends” from the Wood & Strings era of the 80s.

During that magical time, I opened and ran the Wood & Strings Music Center which was a folk music school, guitar and music shop and concert venue.  Through Wood & Strings, I made so many wonderful friends and got to meet, produce concerts for and occasionally perform with many of the region’s finest talent.  I had an amazing staff of teachers and employees, without whom, I would never been able to pull off the ambitious project of W&S.  I sold W&S in 1988 and moved to Arizona, eventually settling in Sedona – a beautiful place where I am now blessed to live.

In the past 30 years, I’ve performed as part of a duo/ensemble, Meadowlark, with my lovely wife, flautist Lynn Trombetta and as a solo instrumental fingerstyle guitarist.  I have very occasionally performed as a singer/guitarist.  In this nostalgic concert, I will be sharing my fingerstyle guitar music but also mixing in some of my old favorite songs from the W&S era and beyond.

This event, as mentioned above will be more than a concert.  My performance will be followed by a Song Circle in the tradition of “The Music Loft” I hosted on Thursday evenings above the shop.  The song Circle will be unamplified and all participants will share music with the group.  I expect many friends from the Wood & Strings days to participate (hint!).  This part of the evening is open to all to perform but interested musicians must sign up at the beginning of the evening on a first come, first serve basis.  Audience members who attend the concert are invited to stay and enjoy listening to the participants of the Song Circle.

I look forward to seeing everyone there!
